Location: Canterbury
Salary: £35,326 to £48,835 per annum
Grade: Grade 7 Academic to Grade 8
Post Type: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed Term - 24 Months
Release Date: Tuesday 31 May 2022
Closing Date: 23.59 hours BST on Tuesday 14 June 2022 (unless otherwise stated)

With a 2025 student strategy emphasising student success at its heart the University of Kent aims to be a community that inspires students from a wide range of backgrounds to find and shape their place in the world, and where academics are free to explore and deepen our understanding of it. Our civic mission goes to the heart of who we are as a university and why we are here – to serve our communities by contributing actively and substantially to their health, wellbeing, prosperity and success.

Kent School of Architecture and Planning is in a buoyant mood, with steady student numbers in its long-established BA and MArch programmes (RIBA Parts 1 and 2), and a developing portfolio of specialist Masters programmes. It is developing its own design Foundation programme, as well as Higher Degree Apprenticeships in architecture and planning. The School is fully engaged in the Creative Estuary project, working with Essex and Kent County Councils in local communities researching in the areas of history and theory, sustainability, sensory communication, narrative environments and digital design. The University is supportive of our expansion plans, having recently approved funding to increase our existing studio spaces.

As the new BA Graphic Design programme in the School of Architecture and Planning at Kent University expands to welcome its second cohort of students, we seek a dynamic and engaged design educator/practitioner/academic to contribute to the development of Graphic Design in our well-established School. The lecturer will work closely with the Programme Director of Graphic Design and provide support, acting as a sounding board for curriculum design, and sharing studio, workshop and lecture/seminar teaching. Although the Head of School is the line manager for all academic staff within the School, the Lecturer will report to the Programme Director on a day-by-day basis.

This is a unique opportunity to join a Kent-based design school with a vision to impact the world by focusing on sustainable development goals and addressing design diversity and design inclusion issues.

The successful candidate will be an inspirational Graphic Design practitioner who has energy and passion for the student experience and works well within multidisciplinary teams. They will also be excited to seek out interdisciplinary opportunities, both within the University of Kent and externally, to cultivate and engage with new and established networks.

In these early stages of the BA development, we are particularly interested in applicants with professional and educational experience in graphic design across a range of media and platforms at a variety of scales. A passion for ethical, inclusive and critical design for social good would be advantageous.

As Lecturer, you will:

Manage own teaching, scholarly, research and administrative activities
Contribute to the development of the curriculum in graphic design, and convene and teach appropriate modules
Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking about visual communication
Develop, present lectures, organise seminars and supervise and tutor student projects
Make additional contributions, as required, to undergraduate and, in due course, postgraduate teaching and supervision
To succeed in this role you will have:

A PhD or Masters in Graphic Design, Visual Communication (or a closely associated field) or equivalent professional/creative experience
Experience of teaching undergraduate modules in HE
Graphic design experience, presentation skills and knowledge of current and emerging software relevant to design and visual communication
The ability to organise and enthuse a design studio
